Rumour Has It: Is Legally Speakin Back?

We are not beating the allegations! And yes, it’s Legally Speakin – without a G! After more than two years of lurking in the shadows, Legally Speakin is back to the University of Ghana School of Law. We are the Lady Whistledown of the UG LSU except, we will never tarnish your image and we ‘gossip’ Legally.

It feels good to be back at a time like this! A lot has been going on, so we hear. There’s a new law school building project? UGSOL won’t you allow other schools win Lex: Lead Essay Competitions? The UG Jessup Team faced Havard in Washington? *sniffs* Is that LSU at 50 I smell? Oh don’t stare at me like that! I know I’m supposed to ‘speak legally’ but I’m not at all boring. For that, I’m beating the allegations. Let me get straight to the point.

Dearest gentle Legal Reader,

Some years back, I was set up by the LSU and handed over to the Blog and Website Committee, who would serve as my administrators. The committee was mandated to encourage the spirit of writing among the LSU. From time to time, your predecessors who are now legal luminaries wrote a piece or two on this prestigious platform. I was a testament that law school was not all about reading cases and scoring grade As. Mooting, networking, writing amongst others have propelled law students later on in life to greater heights. I take it upon myself to welcome all your written pieces – legal writing, creative writing amongst others.

I am sure the Blog and Website Committee of the UG LSU never ceased the chance to announce my return into the LSU community. In light of that, let’s have a little recap of the events that led to my relaunching;

THE POWER OF THE PEN: ENHANCING LEGAL EXPERTISE THROUGH WRITING

My all-time favourite, Ms. Maame Yaa Mensa-Bonsu was generous with her wealth of legal writing knowledge and did justice to the matter at hand at this webinar. We learnt to divide the essence of our essays into ‘bite-sizes’ as she would say. And yes, we will be reading widely in order to become legal writing whizz-kids!

THE LEGALLY SPEAKIN RE-LAUNCH WRITING CONTEST

I must say, I was thrilled! I was remined that the UG LSU was still all that! When I prepared the theme; Data Protection In Ghana, I never imagined you would rise to the ocassion. Y’all really understood the assignment and ate! <oh yes, I’m up to date on all the latest slang> Congratulations to Kakra Sarfo Amponsah, Lidwina Effah and Sandra Ankomah (all of UGSOL ’26) on being the winners of the writing contest. You can find their article on here at the LSU Articles section.

MAY IT PLEASE THE PEN: A WEBINAR ON LEGAL WRITING AND RESEARCH FOR MOOT COURT COMPETITIONS

A special thank you to our alumni – Kweku Agyepong Esq. (Apreku) and Maureen Kyere Esq. on rising to the occassion! Memorial Writing was not so hard after all. We have now learnt to understand the logic of arguments before considering the legalese, divide main arguments into sub-arguments and that special trick Lawyer Apreku taught us. *giggles

Enough of the past! We can’t wait to see which firm will emerge winners at the inter-firm moot court competition this semester! Is it Juris Pontis? No? Animus Domini? Piesie Legal Consult? Lex Apex here’s a friendly advice – you better fast and pray because these firms aren’t playing. We can’t wait to enjoy the scenes here at UGSO…oops, Transitoria!

Did I hear LSU week? I’m sat! Here is where I end my gist. I am back and back for good, remember. Stay safe and study hard. As the popular UGSOL saying goes…you’ll be fine.

Yours Legally.
